Facts and Myths about Skinny Pigs

Myth:  Hairless guinea pigs are unhealthy.

Fact:  Hairless guinea pigs are just as healthy, hardy and long-lived as furred pigs if given proper care.

Myth:  You can't breed hairless pigs to other hairless pigs.

Fact:  While breeding some hairless rodents together, such as rats, is not recommended, it is quite safe to breed hairless pigs to each other.  Breeding in furred pigs can add size and vigor and expand the bloodlines.  I prefer breeding my hairless boars to carriers as the furred sows tend to be larger, but I also breed hairless to hairless.

Myth:  Breeding hairless animals is cruel.

Fact:  Hairless guinea pigs have very friendly, outgoing, clownish personalities.  They are healthy and a joy to have around.  I think they are beautiful animals and just as deserving of life and a loving home as any other animal.
